THE SCROLL

The earliest copies of most biblical writings were written on scrolls, and the scroll is still the preferred way of preserving the Scriptures in Jewish synagogues around the world.

The scroll in the logo therefore symbolizes the Word of God, God present to us in human words and coming down to us in our own languages through the labour of thousands of people as scribes and translators.

The scroll brings to mind such scenes as the prophet Baruch reading to the people in Jeremiah 36:

10 Then, in the hearing of all the people, Baruch read the words of Jeremiah from the scroll, in the house of the LORD

and such prayers as the one in Psalm 40:

7 Then I said, “Here I am; in the scroll of the book it is written of me, 8 I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”

THE SCROLL AND THE LAMP

THE LAMP

The lamp calls to mind the lamp that lights up the city, the New Jerusalem, in Revelation 21:23 "And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb."

It therefore symbolizes Jesus our Saviour. In chapter 1 of the Second Letter of Peter the lamp symbolizes the Word of God in Scripture: 19 So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
