The Living Word: Making sense of Scripture

Jesuits Institute DeaconatesAfter a year of study of Introduction to the Bible with assignments and examinations, the first year students for the Jesuit Institute course in Theology needed to celebrate their achievements and relax with the lecturers: Bernadette Chellew (3rd from the left; Rector of the Catholic Bible College) and Fr John Maneschg (3rd from the right; a Comboni priest who lectures in St John Vianney Seminary and  St Augustine College). The total number of students was 16 – two are missing in the photograph – the photographer and another, probably on the cell! The students found the weekly lectures (Wednesdays: 18:00-21:00) taxing but most rewarding. A very positive experience was the building up of a Christian Community - in which the “little ones” were welcomed!

Bat Kol Programme

Batkol Graduates 2011This is a programme that was started in Jerusalem 28 years ago by a Sister of Zion, Professor Maureena Fritz. The essence of the programme is: “Christians Studying the Bible within its Jewish milieu, (Holy Land), using Jewish Sources”. A team of alumnae from Bat Kol, Jerusalem, continues to produce materials and to run lectures in line with the Bat Kol vision here in Catholic Bible College. The programme is entering its fifth year. The photograph shows the graduates from year 4 – some of them receiving their fourth certificate – with the two current team members Sister Marie Andre Mitchell snd, a part time staff member of Bat Kol, Jerusalem, (1st left in front row), and Bernadette Chellew, Rector of the College (4th from the right in the back row). Most of these students will be part of the group for this year (2012) and we look forward to welcoming many more.  The programme this year will follow the Jewish sources in John’s Gospel and will take a brief look at the Psalms of hope and joy. Tree

CREATION AND THE BIBLE

One biblical image for life is the tree. Have you noticed that there is a tree at the beginning of the Bible and one at the end?

References to the Tree of Life act as bookends for the library of books that is our Bible, appearing near the beginning of Genesis and again in the last chapter of Revelation.

BIBLICAL PRAYER

This week's prayer and reflection focus on this scripture passage .....

Biblical Prayer 11 March 2012

Last week on the 8th of March our Jewish brothers and sisters celebrated the Feast of Purim. It is a day of great rejoicing because the Jews were saved from extinction by Esther, a Jewess and the favourite wife of the Persian King Ahasuerus, under the guidance of her uncle Mordechai. Every Jew is commanded to hear the Megillah (scroll of Esther read twice on the day – sunset to sunset). Exactly a week before in our Catholic Lenten Liturgy (1st March), we read an extract from the Prayer of Esther (4:12-30 in the African Bible). The story of Esther in the Hebrew Scriptures (which is also what the other Christian denominations follow) is much shorter than that in the Greek Scriptures (Septuagint). You can explore for yourself by looking at a Bible without the Deutero-canonical books (Good News or New King James) and comparing it with one that is the Catholic Edition (African Bible or any other where it states on the cover: “With Deutero Canon/Apocrypha”).

Here is the beginning of Esther’s prayer:

My Lord, our King, the only one
Come to my help, for I am alone
And have no helper but you
and am about to take my life in my hands.

Let us make this prayer our own is this time of Lent as we journey with Jesus along the road to Calvary, die with Him and rise in Him at Easter.

LINKS TO WEBSITES OF INTEREST FOR BIBLICAL STUDIES
There are many websites of biblical interest but you need to be cautious in selecting ones to use. Many take a somewhat fundamentalist approach. On this page we will recommend one new website every two weeks and clicking on this link will take you to the cumulative list.

This week’s website is:
Catholic Resources for Bible, Liturgy, Art, and Theology presented by Rev Felix Just sj of the Loyola Institute for Spirituality in Orange, California:
http://catholic-resources.org/index.html
The website is a rich resource for biblical and liturgical studies and is very reliable. It features a growing collection of educational resources for study of the New Testament, in particular the Gospel and Letters of John. Highly recommended.
